Why does the windshield washer pump fail?
- Frozen washer fluid: If summer washer fluid or plain water is left in the system during winter, freezing liquid can crack the plastic pump housing or prevent the impeller from turning.
- Running dry: Operating the pump when the washer reservoir is empty can cause excessive heat buildup and premature motor failure.
- Limescale and deposits: Using ordinary tap water can cause mineral deposits to build up inside the washer system, restricting the pump filter and increasing the load on the motor.
- Electrical wear: Over time, the internal brushes may wear out, electrical contacts can corrode, or the washer fuse may fail. On the Prius II, the washer system is protected by the WASHER fuse located in the passenger compartment.
How is the windshield washer pump replaced?
On the Toyota Prius II, the washer reservoir has two similar pumps. The pump positioned closer to the engine is used for the front windshield, while the other pump is used for the rear windshield.
- Access the washer reservoir: Open the bonnet and remove the plastic radiator cover and air intake ducting to gain access to the washer fluid reservoir.
- Disconnect the electrical connector: Release the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connector from the front windshield washer pump.
- Prepare a container: Place a suitable container underneath the vehicle, as washer fluid will drain from the reservoir when the pump is removed.
- Disconnect the hose: Remove the rubber hose supplying washer fluid to the windshield nozzles.
- Remove the pump: The pump is not secured with bolts. It is pressed into a rubber seal/grommet in the reservoir. Carefully move and pull the pump out of the reservoir.
- Install the new pump: Fit the rubber seal/grommet if required, press the new pump into the reservoir, reconnect the hose and electrical connector, and refill the reservoir with washer fluid.
